The video for Riptide is an interesting one to analyse because it combines several key features identified by Andrew Goodwin in his book Dancing in the Distraction Factory. I think the video Illustrates, and also amplifies the lyrics as the imagery used clearly relates to the lyrics, such as right at the start after the instrumental intro, the lyrics are "I was scared of dentists and the dark" and to fit with this the second shot is of a woman scared in a dentists chair, and then the third shot being a light going out into darkness, both of which are static close up shots to simply illustrate the lyrics and show the audience exactly what the lyrics mean. When the lyrics refer to all his friends turning green, it is followed by a close up shot of green dollar bills, illustrating the point that his friends are becoming green like the money, but it also amplifies the lyrics as it has connotations of greed, saying his friends only want money, or even that they are being filled by envy and jealousy.
