Evaluation of practical skills

At the start of the year I began with a decent amount of knowledge on video production after doing several years of media and film studies where I had the ability to learn how to use cameras and also techniques of filming and skills when it comes to creating videos. Of course though I was still an amateur when it came to creating videos and so this leads onto the first production I made with the help of two friends which was called Life of fly.

Life of Fly was our first attempt at creating a video as part of the course, and for this particular video we had four hours to come up with an idea for an unusual perspective, and so I though that we could create a video from the perspective of a fly, and so to help create this view we decided to simply take out a camera and move it around in a random motion sort of like how you would see a fly move around in real life. Now due to this being one of our first videos and only being a simple idea, the practical skills put into it were fairly limited, other than getting the ISO and aperture right to make the video look nicer.

The next video that I was able to apply practical skills directly to would of been my music video in which I shot the majority of the footage for. Now the space between the first video where I was able to apply practical skills and the music video was rather large, but I was able to continue learning more skills through lessons and general practicing with cameras in my free time. But in the music video we had the plan to create a narrative video that told a story throughout the song, and so this meant I could use a variety of skills to help give across a narrative. For example I used a number of close up shots to show emotion on the characters faces, and also some medium two shots that could show the actions of the characters and their emotion together. I also used an establishing shot which required me to move the camera throughout the home panning it around to follow the movement of the room. I believe that these skills shown in the music video are a huge improvement than that shown in the previous video, and also from when I began the year only knowing the types of skills and rarely implementing them into any effect.

After this I did some more videos for a client at the college who needed some assistance filming some presentations, and so this allowed me to once again apply to practical skills even if in a minimal form. All I had to do for these was just set up a camera and frame it so that both the presenters and the screen would be in shot with the correct lighting to see the screen and also the people in it. We also chose to use a two camera set up for this to see if we could get any better way of presenting the presentations on video which did go well.

My next production was the promotional video in which I got to apply more practical skills simply through the use of panning shots to let the audience feel like they are gazing through the work place themselves and getting a good look, and the panning shots allowed for this by showing a lot of the workplace in one take. I also planned ahead for the idea to use panning shots to be able to use fades in editing to make the advert seem smoother and flow better as an advert should do. I also chose to include an establishing shot to obviously show the audience what is being advertised, as this made a lot of sense to do for an advert. Some other unique skills I had to apply were a static shot that was focused on a specific spot where a car would have to reverse into, in order to show off the company logo since I didn't have any graphic on hand to use in editing. And also I did a transition with the camera by getting a close up of a light turning on and causing the footage to go white.

Personally my practical skills I feel have definitely improved since beginning the course, and in my opinion my strength is implementing skills in videos to help create effect. However if I was to say where I was weak with my practical skills it would be with the variety of skills being used, for example it's all good using different shot types, but I could have used different lighting styles more, and other techniques that didn't involve the shot type, such as framing scenes in specific ways and using more techniques like pull focusing.
