Film Studies Essay Evaluation

Film Essay Evaluation

I centered my essay around the two theories, the theories of the id, ego and superego by Sigmund Freud, and the theories of mirror stage and Lack from Jacques Lacan. I chose those because I felt I could get a a decent mix of arguments for the theories from the films that I chose. I felt my choice of theories to talk about was good because they fit well together as Lacans theory goes into desire which fits in with the id from Freuds theory, so I think I made a good choice when considering the theories to discuss. The films I discussed to interpret the theories from were 'Fight Club', 'Mother' and 'Whiplash'. On this choice I also felt I made a good decision as Fight Club and Mother can both have Freuds theory applied to them but can be interpreted in many different ways allowing for good contrast that I could write about in my essay, and with Whiplash I felt it was a good choice to show the interpretation of Lacans theory because I felt that the narrative showed that off well enough for me to then write and discuss about.

When it came to actually analysing the films I think I did an okay job at it as I went in and generally discussed what I thought about the theory and how the film linked to it and how you could interpret from the film, then I went into some in depth analysis about my idea and showed certain scenes which helped prove my point further. However with Fight club I felt that I may have gone too into general discussion about the theory and how it can be interpreted, instead of balancing it with more in depth scene analysis to further prove my point and support what I claim. This I felt I also did with Mother but I did improve slightly as I gave more technical points after discussing my ideas about the theory and the film, but still below the usual standard of technical analysis. When analysing Whiplash I felt I did best out of the three films as I went into a lot of detail looking at the scenes to argue how you can interpret Lacans theory from it, but even on this one I probably didn't go into enough detail explaining Lacans theory and how it applies to the movie in question. Probably another thing I could improve on is incorporating my research and more quotes into my essay to help support my statements.

Overall I believe my essay was okay, I felt the topics I picked were good and I addressed them well with some research and technical analysis, but I could add more detail to those areas to further improve the final outcome of my essay.
